Re: Why Campaign against Religion?
You're being sarcastic?

"...get rid of" it? As if there were some action that could accomplish this? Like outlaw it? Or talk people out of it? Do we need an intellectual elite to decide what is and is not appropriate for people to believe in?

People need to think for themselves, honestly assess their own experience, and figure out where they stand on their own, instead of being led by others' beliefs. And until everyone is ready for that there's always going to be people susceptible to ideologies of absolutes.

Tollerance is perhaps the only thing that will allow such a situation to develop, anything else would only exacerbate the situation.

Tollerating intollerance is a tough thing to accept. Certainly there's a line that must be drawn. But outlawing intollerance might only allow empower hate and ignorance.

Re: How Did the Universe Begin?
Sounds like you're refering to the Steinhardt Turok theory of cyclic "big bangs."

Re: Why Do People Laugh at Creationists? Ep.10
I'll add: the point of my calling attention to the the article I pasted below is not to support the idea that the universe was created by a creator or that any credible scientists support such a view, but rather to point out that the guy that makes these videos is full of shit. He's a moron to think he can so easily dispatch the idea that it appears that some physical constants to seem finely tuned for matter as we know it, and therefore for life as we know it. Gravity is not one of the forces that appears so finely tuned, but the fine structure constant is.

This guy that's supposedly laughing at the creationists is pulling facts out of his ass just as badly as they are. Did he weigh that rock at the end, and compare it to the mass of a pinhead sized fleck of iron? No, he just starts in with numbers assuming he's totally ridiculed another point of view. Seems really familiar.

Re: Why Do People Laugh at Creationists? Ep.10
The creationists clearly have no grasp of the issue, but the author of this piece doesn't understand what he's talking about either. The idea that life as we know it could evolve without gravity is nonsense. The absence of gravity in molecular dynamics simulations says nothing about the issue either.

Furthermore (from Science 11 August 2006: Vol. 313. no. 5788, p. 750 - 753):

"Physicists have long heaped scorn on anyone who tried to explain features of the universe by pointing out that had they been otherwise, life would be impossible.

This "anthropic principle," many physicists charged, abandoned the longstanding goal of finding equations that specify all of nature's properties. Most preferred the notion that a comprehensive theory would account for everything the universe has to offer.

Ironically, however, the favored candidate for that approach--superstring theory--may be exacerbating the very problem everybody hoped it would solve. Far from disposing of anthropic reasoning, string theory has reinvigorated its advocates, leading to a philosophical schism within the physics community."

Re: SNL Digital Short: Iran So Far
Close, but:

"I know you say there's no gays in Iran, but you're in New York, baby" is possibly the best line in politically focused comedy of the millenium.
