Re: Brainiac: Orchestra on Helium
Just to let you know, Braniac has nothing to do with the BBC. Its a SKY programme, as in the satellite broadcaster owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Re: Pat Condell: Welcome to Saudi Britain
"If the Sharia court rules that a wife-beating is OK"

It wouldn't though because that would be against existing UK law, which is the whole point - UK Sharia law doesn't supersede UK criminal law.

Re: Pat Condell: Welcome to Saudi Britain
No halfway point can be reached? - Rubbish! The very fact that both parties have to agree to this arbitration for it to be recognised by UK law is in itself - a midway point. This isn't compulsory, even for the most devout UK Muslim.

it can't be rewritten? - Again, rubbish. There are many "flavours" of Sharia law, of varying strengths - which is to say, there is no "one true Sharia". If you were to visit multiple Islamic nations you would find their interpretations of Sharia vary significantly - from the most strict (such as the Afghan/Taliban interpretation), to much more moderate forms (as in Malaysia). Contrary to your , and Pats, suggestions, the UK interpretation of Sharia is cherry picked from the more moderate versions, specifically the areas which are both relevant to life in a western country while not infringing on existing UK law (such as issues of criminal law - thieves will not have their hand chopped off, which is the Taliban's strict interpretation).

Re: Pat Condell: Welcome to Saudi Britain
As a British Atheist I guess i should be loving this video.

But i don't.

A lot of this is blown out of proportion. Sharia courts for instance are no different, conceptually or legally, than Beth Din - the Jewish equivalent which have been in operation in the UK for nearly 200 years - without issue.

Also Pat fails to mention that for the jurisdiction of Sharia courts to be recognised by UK law, both parties must agree to it - any women who feels coerced, or simply unhappy with the Sharia ruling, can simply ignore it - which then leaves it up to the other party to take the issue down the usual UK legal route (county or even high court). Interestingly, this does not apply in cases of "khulah" (female instigated divorce) in which any male objections are ignored by the court.

It should also be mentioned that Sharia courts are civil courts, as opposed to law courts, and are intended (and only have jurisdiction for) mediation between two Muslim parties on family or business disagreements - such as "riba", or "usury", the Islamic prohibition of charging or collecting of monetary interest between two muslim parties - which isn't covered in UK law.

I'll have to cut this short as i have to go to work now, so i'll leave you with this:

The reason the UK has these kind of courts of arbitration, whether they be Beth Din, Sharia, or even typical divorce courts (based on Christian ideals) is because we are a tolerant society.

If Pat wants to live in a place with a level of intolerance equal to his own - he should go live in North Korea, or Zimbabwe.

Re: Back in Black: Bush v. Blair Approval
And on top of this, from a Brits point of view, although I've seen Blair on The Daily Show, and in the crowd at the Olympics in China recently... I haven't seen him once on UK TV, or any other public engagement in Britain in the 15 months since he stepped down, and that includes the Labour party conference... In fact, the current Labour Prime Minister and Blair's right hand man, Gordon Brown, in his 1 hour speech to the Labour Party yesterday, only mentioned his name once.

...and then there are the numerous front bench Labour MPs who resigned in protest of the Iraq war.

To say that Britain dislikes Blair is a considerable understatement.

That passage would be a lot more convincing if it didn't have all the references to "God" in it.
