A Pool Filled with Non-Newtonian Fluid
A tv show from Barcelona, Spain filled a pool with a mix of cornstarch and water made on a concrete mixer truck. It becomes a non-newtonian fluid. When stress is applied to the liquid it exhibits properties of a solid.

DARPA is conducting experiments using this concept in body armor. The idea is to have flexible ballistic plates that allow the body to move, yet 'harden' when shrapnel or bullets hit it.

The Mythbusters did this with much more grace and less fanfare. And you get to learn something about it, too.

Re: A Pool Filled with Non-Newtonian Fluid
The person that wrote that caption for this piece got the definition of a non-Newtonian fluid wrong. It acts like a solid on application of a fast STRAIN rate (not stress), and it acts like a liquid on application of a slow strain rate.

Re: A Pool Filled with Non-Newtonian Fluid
I must admit that all the times I have played with cornstarch and water in a bowl, I always dreamed of filling a kiddie pool with the stuff and running on the surface. It may be silly, but I'm watching a dream come true... for someone else.
