This film, shot mostly covertly, shows the irony of a regime where 20 million people lived in poverty, some on the brink of starvation, while former dictator Kim II Sung built extravagant monuments to reflect his power.
He fostered a grotesque personality cult, which his son and successor Kim Jong Il perpetuates. All around the capital, Pyongyang, an endless stream of propaganda glorifies the leaders.
Monuments and museums pay homage to them, but they are strangely empty.

why one man's psychopathology has to completely enslave an entire population is beyond wicked evil.
its a good damn thing for kim jong il[k] that OUR oil isnt under his land, or the US would have to liberate that country with George "WMD" Bush's DEMONcracy.

Simply stunning.
Constant war to unite the people in fear. All-encompassing leader worship. A class of party members and the 'proles' who live in destitute poverty... I can't--or don't want to--imagine a more complete realization of an Orwellian society.
It's hard to believe that there can ever be any healing from the kind of damage that the Kim dynasty has done to the people. After generations of absolute propaganda, how can people possibly cope with what they might learn if they were exposed to the world beyond their borders?
