WTH is this crap? I've heard of this, but still don't understand. Who is the target audience? What's the moral? Why is the rat a Nazi?

There is now a kind of taboo on Nazi depictions that did not exist when I was a kid in the 70s (the same era as H R Pufnstuf).

Nazi references had a really weird role in popular culture, usually being played for laughs. We had "Springtime for Hitler" from Mel Brooks's "The Producers." There was the Artie Johnson character on "Laugh-in." There was "Hogan's Heroes."

This was less than 30 years after the end of the war, and I think we were still in that wartime mode were you try to belittle the enemy, to make fun of them and make them seem less of a threat.

I'm glad we take this more seriously now. The last six years in the U.S. have made it seem like anything can happen in this country, and it might be good to have something that makes us shudder and remember depths that supposedly civilized people can sink to.

That was actually kinda cool...of course, I'VE been pufnstuf, too!
