BBC Horizon: The $6 Billion Experiment
In the coming months the most complex scientific instrument ever built will be switched on. The Large Hadron Collider promises to recreate the conditions right after the Big Bang. By revisiting the beginning of time, scientists hope to unravel some of the deepest secrets of our Universe.

Re: BBC Horizon: The $6 Billion Experiment
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator and collider located at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland ( 46°14?N, 6°03?E). Currently under construction, the LHC is scheduled to begin operation in May 2008. The LHC is expected to become the world's largest and highest energy particle accelerator. The LHC is being funded and built in collaboration with over two thousand physicists from thirty-four countries, universities and laboratories.

When switched on, it is hoped that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson particle — often dubbed the God Particle — the observation of which could confirm the predictions and 'missing links' in the Standard Model of physics, and explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass.

Re: BBC Horizon: The $6 Billion Experiment
The Higgs Field theory definitely rang well when thinking on the physical degeneration astronauts suffer in space. Wouldn't quite explain energy = mass though, moreso side effects of leaving the range of what diverges our mass' energy towards a common 'foe' focal point. Gravity already covers the 'why' of that pretty well, so it could be more of a quick mental tickle really. 8)

Well, as Neil deGrasse Tyson said it: "They were worried. So someone did the calculations, and it showed that it probably won't happen."

Expect of course they forgot to carry the 2...

Forget about the "unforeseen consequences." This is truly an exciting time for physics. Revolutions in our basic understanding fundamental particles are going to result from this experiment.

Now THIS is what I'm talking about!

So far, everything I've seen from BBC Horizons in this website has been absolutely outstanding.

Thank you.
