An Army unit pull over a van and while searching it, one of the soldiers does an imitation of Will Ferrell doing Harry Caray to see what his reaction would be.

Playing a joke while carrying a weapon is surely very relaxing to the person being questioned.
A well-intentioned 2/10.

Agreed. I was more than a little embarrassed by this soldier's lack of professionalism.

Jeeze, loosen up. I thought it was pretty funny.

Do your research, taking into account inflation our deficit isn't bad compared to any other years in history.

I feel like I wouldnt have found this funny before seeing Gunner Palace. But now I do... If you cant answer the question "What are our troops doing on a daily basis?" do yourself a favor and rent the movie.

Re: Soldier Imitates Will Ferrell as Harry Caray
That is the opposite of funny. Intimidating the local population is both ignorant and nasty.

Re: Soldier Imitates Will Ferrell as Harry Caray
I hardly find a US soldier making an impression of Harry Caray to be intimidating. Granted, people with big guns are innately scary, but I don't think the Harry Caray impression necessarily exacerbated the situation. Did it confuse the guy? Absolutely, but I don't think there's anything inherently malicious in confusing people. I like to do it all the time.

Re: Soldier Imitates Will Ferrell as Harry Caray
Excuse me? Are you kidding? It doesn't matter what the hell he's saying. Someone who has both unlawfully entered your country and stopped your car on the road without any reason talking and LAUGHING at you straight into your face in a language you don't understand while weilding an assault rifle? And you wonder why people hate Americans?
This sort of behaviour is disgusting. You won't win hearts and minds pulling this kind of crap. If that soldier's superiors had any sense, they'd court martial him and anyone else involved immediately. Above anything else it's hugely embarassing for the military.
The only thing positive about this clip is that it pretty much embodies the daily activities of the US. "Find 'terrorists'?" "Nah, let's do impressions of crappy celebrities no-one knows to some clueless middle-eastern guy!"

No, I'm not kidding. I'm not sure why you assume that they stopped the van for no reason, as you can easily see some very non-threatening soldiers search the van. I mean jeez, the man was LAUGHING at the soldiers.
I really think you're blowing this way out of proportion.

Re: Soldier Imitates Will Ferrell as Harry Caray
Ok straight up... if you cant make people laugh, Your country is f**ked. ... And im not kidding. Lighten the mood... Laugh... make others laugh. If Soldiers are not able to be human beings they turn into monsters. If you WANT monsters in other countries, then treat soldiers like machines... Court Martial them when they do something funny... and leave them alone when they brutally murder whole towns.
If professionalism is being cold calculating death machines with no soul. then sure this isnt funny... but seriously dont take the soul out of the soldier. If they stop being human beings, terrible things happen... Like Abir ...
That was serious... this ... isnt.

Re: Soldier Imitates Will Ferrell as Harry Caray
Abu Ghraib and every other atrocity happenedly precisely because they were human beings. It's been experimented many a time before by psychologists - put anyone, regardless of creed or colour, in a situation where they have total authority and dominance over another person without any ramifications whatsoever and that someone will do the most heinous of things. Give someone an inch and they'll take a mile. This "jokey" little film is but the first glimmer of such behaviour.
Being a professional is being empathetic and relating to the local population, and hopefully having a shred of dignity for the nation you're representing. Soldiers are meant to do what they're told, not what they feel like doing. The iraqi has no clue what any of them are saying (and don't tell me he knows English, he mumbles barely two phrases - "Can I help you?" and "I no understand"), or why they are laughing. All he knows is that they have guns and he better start laughing with them. After all, what else could he do? Scream something in Arabic and dance on top of a burning flag?
If any of you have a modicum of wit, put yourself in that iraqi's position and see how you react to that kind of pressure. Guaranteed, that iraqi, as soon as he was out of earshot, will tell all his friends that a bunch of foreign assholes stopped him and started laughing at him. Not only that, they filmed him just to see how embarassed he would get.
Can't you just settle with blowing someone's country up and leave it at that? Do you *really* have to stoop even lower by making a cheap video clip?

I don't think that it's reasonable for you to assume what's going on in the Iraqi's head, and I also don't think that it's reasonable for you to assume that he doesn't understand what's going on. It looks like a standard road side search.
If a cop pulled me over and started doing his Harry Caray impression, I wouldn't be humiliated. If a cop pulled me over and started doing his Harry Caray impression in a language I didn't understand, I still wouldn't be humiliated.
If you weren't blowing this out of proportion before, you definitely are now.

Re: Soldier Imitates Will Ferrell as Harry Caray
And I don't it is reasonable for you, or anyone else, to assume that the unfortunate iraqi somehow finds this kind of activity funny. Try living in a military state and see how amusing it is.
On top of everything else, no one outside the states knows who the hell Harry Caray is, nor would they be able to discern that that hick of a soldier was doing a very bad impression of an impression.

That Iraqi guy had a grin on his face almost the whole time during that clip. He was amused... guns or not.
