For what it's worth, the vast majority of weddings in the United States still constitute some form of the father giving away the bride. I was just at a wedding tonight where this was the case, and two other weddings I've been to this summer alone were also like this. It was this way for my own wedding. It's just a traditional thing to do. I even did the traditional call the father to ask for his daughter's hand in marriage thing too, more so to be polite to let the parents have a heads up that I was about to pop the question so the announcement didn't come out of the blue. <p>I guess my point is that there is still that concept of the father giving away the bride at a wedding and that's what this is about. I still think this thing is stupid because almost nobody I know (including all of the brides I have seen this summer and my own wife) stays abstinent until marriage - beyond the general weirdness of a father taking his daughter to a prom of some kind.

Bill is just mad cause that cuts down on the number of young girls he might could get some from. While the ring thing and the cake is a little weird, if that's even true, still you got to give the girls props for doing the right thing. Bill is nothing but a pervert, and probably wishes all teenage girls would put out, especially to his old ass.
