Ever wonder what it was like to work at the Disney Studio during the Golden Age of Animation? Think it was the "happiest place on Earth"? Think again.
This 1943 booklet, given to all new employees, spelled it out for you.
Gals ain't allowed in the Penthouse Club, personal phone calls will be charged to you, and if you need to leave the studio, you cannot do so without an "Off the Lot Pass".
Oh, and "Any violation of the U.
S.
Espionage Act" will get you discharged.

Most of these guidelines don't seem out of the ordinary. I'd love to have a job like that! Most of these guys got paid very well.
It was a different time back then, and it almost had to be run like a military operation because they were heavily involved with entertaining the troops. This was back before Hollywood became the war-hating, liberal hypocrites they are today.

Only men have access to the penthouse.
Heh. That would go over real well these days.
Of course, the woman get more sick days.

Heh. yea, women probably got "woman problem" days. Walt was mortally afraid of things that bleed, but don't die.

Don't you remember any of the uplifting war movies from Hollywood made in the last 10 years? I can.

Re: The Ropes at Disney
Since when has "war-hating" been an insult? C'mon, Allute, you were a military brat. Do you really love war?

Re: The Ropes at Disney
You can't hate a war just because it's a war. That would be a prejudiced opinion.

If you do any in-depth reading about the early days of the Walt Disney Co., all kinds of practices arise that were harsh even for the time.

Re: The Ropes at Disney
Another thing that most don't know, all through the 40's and WW2, Disney made many animated films for military training, especially for pilots and gunners. Warner Bros (Bugs Bunny people) as well. thus, the "espionage act clause."

Re: The Ropes at Disney
There is a DVD boxed set called on the front lines that includes some of these training films as well as others with Goofy selling war bonds and the like.

Ahahah, one page that really made me lol was the page with the two employees kicking that Wrench out. I can't remember what the Wrench was referred to as, but yeah, still fairly funny. Very 1950.
