Insane Balloon Hat Maker
An inspired balloon hat maker talks about bratty kids, styrofoam heads, and how we went from self-hate to self-enjoyment.

Filmed in a 3-hour period while wandering the streets of NYC.

Not Majorly impressive, but impressive none the less.
The "Balloon Hat Guy" has a great attitude, although apparently well earned, about his talent and its purpose.
I could have frankly done without the woman trating it like a film project, but acknowledge that if it were not for her and M&C, I would probably had not seen this guy.

Re: Insane Balloon Hat Maker
She must be some kind of idiot-savant film maker. It takes a lot of taste and good judgement to put together a short documentary as interesting and entertaining as this one. However, the intro and closing are awful. The "welcome to my humble abode" line was a mistake, and a documentary filmmaker with any sort of sense would never have filmed someone else's life and then said "This is my story".

The Balloon Hat Guy is great, though: "I was a self-hating baloon twister."

Ouch! Well, sorry to disappoint you guys on the open/close...ha ha. I appreciate the feedback though. It's good to know these things! I just thought saying hello in the beginning would be a nice way to make it more personal for the internet. Now I know.

As far as the shooting/editing goes - it took me 3-hours to shoot and 7-hours to edit on Final Cut Pro. We didn't plan anything...just kept on running into people on and off the street to make hats for. Either way, thanks for watching!!

Wow, how to review this. First, let me say that I'm a big fan of juggling and manipulation tricks. I think this falls into that category. He's probably the best at what he does, even if it does seem asinine. However, his TRUE talent is clearly making people happy. Even if it is just with some balloons. Everyone he makes a hat for probably goes on to have a great day, and I don't know about you but I wish that I could do that. He has a real talent. His talent is not just balloons. As for the closing and intro, they weren't that bad, but the opening seemed a little hard pressed. Like you were forcing yourself to do it for the camera. Try to lay back and relax in front of the camera next time. A drink or two usually help. Just don't overdo it. And I would be very happy to see any other videos on similar subject matter that you put out. Keep it up!

Oh dear. I didn't realize you posted this yourself, or I wouldn't have been so catty.

After taking a look at your travel movies I better understand where you're coming from. Your work in front of the camera and your work behind it are both good. The way you shot and edited the balloon guy doc gave it a very different kind of storytelling voice than the one that comes across when you are in the frame, and the open/close scenes were a bit jarring. My criticism of the "this is my story" line is based on the fact that you do such a good job of letting the balloon guy tell his own story.

Please make more documentaries and post them.
