Mark Knopfler: Sultan of Swing
Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton perform the Dire Strights classic 'Sultan of Swing' live.

Hey Eric, nice pink strap. This is a great song but this version kinda sucks. Near the end it turns into an elevator song and Eric Clapton just stands around doing nothing.

You noticed that too, eh? CLapton was like...what, 2nd rhythm guitarist. That's about as useless as a third nut on the Pope. One of the greatest guitarist in the world putzing some lame open chords out, while Knopler(sp) drops the ball on his solos. Top it off with a muzak ending, complete with SAX solo, and some 80's guitarist flirting-with-each-other stuff, and you have a really underwhelming clip.

However, it's good for history's sake, in the least.

The song would have sounded better if the quality of the recording wasn't so bad... levels kept going up and down.

Didn't I see Rob Reiner direct this before? Ack. So sad to see two great guitarists go so far south in their twilight.

Re: Mark Knopfler: Sultan of Swing
I didn't think it was as bad as everyone says. Eric Clapton uses his name to sell some tickets so his buddy Mark can make some loot- great. Besides, he does a great job on backup. Besides, Knopfler's music doesn't really lend itself to Clapton's style of playing, and he is a badass in his own right. Besides, besides, besides...

besides, it's "Sultans". "We are the Sultans of Swing" not "We are the Sultan of Swing". Somebody get the exorcist!
