Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
2x the vehicle speed equals 4x the braking distance required to stop a car.
By: theEDUCATOR
Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
well, it does depend on what kind of brakes (pads, rotors, and anti-lock ability), suspension, weight and tires you have which would increase or decrease that ratio....

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
actually I think that statistic depends on driver reaction time and the inertia of the vehicle.

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
While it is true that they do have an effect, there is very little to be done to a car to modify it to stop better on the road. Most of the mods guys do to their cars makes them set up more like a race car. Ultra low (and therefore stiff) suspension and aggressive brakes work terrible on bumpy highways and icy or wet roads. Even while dry they don't work as well as advertised. Remember that roads are often poorly maintained, are bumpy, have crap all over them and above all are NOT race tracks.

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
It's not a statistic, it's a physics equation. e = mvv. Doubling the mass means double the energy, while doubling the velocity means quadruple the energy.
Whatever braking system or suspension or weight or tires you have, traveling at twice the speed means four times the energy must be somehow dissipated by the stopping, until whatever energy's left goes into the crash.

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
Looks like the song was "The Lucky One", written by Robert Lee Castleman but performed here, I think, by Alison Krauss.

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
The original is by Alison Krauss, but this doesn't sound like the version that was released.
Here is a not so great quality of the video.

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
This has nothing to do with speeding....first of all the car that got hit in the side was totally at fault because they did not have the right of way. Also, they clearly could have seen that car coming and let it go first before they made the left turn onto the street (or it could be that the driver had a poor sense of depth perception to judge the speed of the oncoming car). So basically this PSA has more to do with looking before you turn than it has to do with speeding.

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
If she wasn't speeding she wouldn't have hit the car. The person driving the other car probably couldn't see the car coming whne they left the corner. The traffic speed is often set up to allow other drivers the time to enter the roadway. Hence the idea that driving the speed limit helps save lives.
PS sometimes the time a vehicle will take to stop is far harder to judge than their relative speed.

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
First of all, it was a fictional, staged accident, so the PSA is about whatever it says it was about.
Secondly, the accident might have been avoided entirely at a lower speed.
Finally, a car traveling 60 mph has 44% more kinetic energy than one going 50 mph. So regardless of who was at fault, the speeder is responsible for causing considerably more damage than would have resulted from a collision at a legal speed.

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
If anyone noticed, the woman who was supposedly speeding was in an old buggy car that could hit about 160mph if floored (if you pause at the speedometer). Plus, it is VERY funny to play the video backwards and watch the woman's facial expressions change as she slams into the car!

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
I watched this a few times. Here are my observations:
1. Because of the road sign, this doesn't appear to be the United States. I also don't see multiple units on the speedometer. So, it's likely that her speedometer shows kilometers per hour rather than miles per hour.
2. She seems to be going about 92 kph from what I can see on the speedometer. That translates into about 57 mph, and an "old buggy car" shouldn't have too much trouble going that fast.
3. Her facial expression is rather funny. However, playing it backwards, I still don't see why in one shot she looks like "oh shit" and in the next shot, right after the impact, she looks serene.
I also noticed that, more a factor than her speed, she seemed to not be paying attention to the road ahead of her. Playing it backwards, it seems to me that she should have had plenty of time to react, but she wasn't looking at the road at the moment the car pulled out. Speeding or not, if you aren't looking at the road and someone pulls into your path, you are in danger.

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
If it's a Danish ad, I'd imagine the speedometer is in KPH, not MPH. If the speedo goes up to 160, that's about 100 MPH, and these days, even econoboxes have 140 MPH speedos. It registered about 100 KPH in the video (around 60 MPH) and the limit posted on the sign was 80 KPH (around 50 MPH).

Re: Speeding Hurts: Collision
That woman's face is brilliant.
Taking a wild guess, it might be part of the UK government's safe driving thing (usually the ads are under the title of 'Think!') mostly because the last part says 'Speeding Hurts' in English. We have had plenty of screwy adverts similar to this especially in Northern Ireland. The best one was a slow motion one of a guy bouncing around inside a car killing everyone of the passengers including his girlfriend because HE WASN'T WEARING A SEATBELT.
