Mr. Rogers Speaks to the US Senate
In 1969 the US Senate had a hearing on funding the newly developed Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

The proposed endowment was $20 million, but President Nixon wanted it cut in half because of the spending going on in the Vietnam War.

This is an video clip of the exchange between Mr. Rogers and Senator Pastore, head of the hearing.

Senator Pastore starts out very abrasive and by the time Mr. Rogers is done talking, Senator Pastore's inner child has heard Mr. Rogers and agreed with him.

Ya know...it's easy to make Mr. Rogers the target of jokes and such, but he really was a cool, classy guy.

That gave me goosebumps as well - especially in light of the context of this hearing.

Re: Mr. Rogers Speaks to the US Senate
Yeah, goosebumps and sadness for me. I hope that someone else like him comes along. Having worked with kids I think that they are missing someone like Mr. Rogers and could really use him in their lives

I love being reminded that the system used to work somewhat.

We're worse for him being gone. Can the modern world as it is still produce a man like this?

It's hard to look at that man and imagine he was a Marine sniper in WW2. Still good to have had him around though. Did lots of good for kids during his time.

Props to Mr. Rogers.

Re: Mr. Rogers Speaks to the US Senate
It's hard? Really? I don't think so at all, in this clip Fred Rogers literally takes cool, calm aim at his goal and pulls of a "real" toughness. Do you think anyone else in the world could read those song lyrics in the US senate without the slightest discomfort. When he's asked "would it make you happy if you could read it," he squashes the attempt at belittlement like the badass that he is. Just some badasses care about the world they live in and the people who inhabit it.

Man, I hope there is a heaven just so that Fred Rogers can be there.

Oh, and it looks like the sniper thing is urban legend. Regardless, I still think Mister Rogers displays balls of steel in this clip.

Goosebumps, tears and a hearty round of applause here. Born in the early 70s, I grew up in a chaotic household. PBS provided me with education, distraction, consistency, calm, and support.

He was truly a great man. I'm certain he helped a huge number children survive during-and-post-vietnam America. Only a man with balls of steel would have even tried to remind those guys about the kids in that era.

Re: Mr. Rogers Speaks to the US Senate
Born in early ninties and I still watched mr. Rogers. I never truly understood how much he understands children, untill now. I wonder if he ever got some kind of award for his work, because he should.

Sad thing is that whoever tried to show so much care for children today would be prejudized as a pedophile. I hope that there is someone who is willing to follow Fred Rogers, Bless his soul.

Re: Mr. Rogers Speaks to the US Senate
Yes, he was honoured.

With the simple command he gave during this acceptance speech, he reduced all of Hollywood to tears one last time.

There's a description of the same speech on his Wikipedia page, exerpted from Esquire.
