A Bridge Too Far - Starting Towards Arnhem
From Richard Attenborough's 1977 WWII epic about Montgomery's failed Operation Market-Garden in the Fall of 1944.

The British infantry, with artillery and air support, find German resistance along the Dutch road leading to Arnhem.

Re: A Bridge Too Far - Starting Towards Arnhem
Operation Market-Garden was sold to Allied Command as Field Marshall Montgomery's attempt to end the war by Christmas 1944, and we all know how THAT turned out.

The idea was to drop off a massive amount of paratroopers along four Dutch river crossings occupied by German troops, take and hold those points, and wait for the cavalry to arrive by road.

However, unrealistic expectations, lack of coordination and communication, as well as bureaucracy and politicking (Patton was inexplicably not assigned here) isolated the Allied forces up north, forcing them to retreat.

Some ground was gained, and it is believed that Market-Garden did speed up Allied advance towards Berlin, even though a couple of months later, the Germans exploited a weak point in the Allied front and punctured a huge hole which became known as The Battle Of The Bulge, a nasty piece of business fought entirely south of the Market-Garden target area.

Oops, hey Jaxon, if you're reading this, could you change the text in the header comments? The film is from 1977, but I messed up and it came out as 1997.
