Some think that McCain will the proverbial (or maybe not) dog that runs away with the bone. If that happens, the system - bad as it is already - can be said to be truly rotten as hell.

The system is rotten as hell, regardless of the winner. If McCain wins, it can be said that the Democratic party is as disorganized as they say it is.
Actually, regardless of whether or not McCain wins, the Democratic party is still pretty disorganized.
