The World of Tim Burton
Tim Burton ... his name is sure to ring a bell. Vincent (1982), Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), Beetle Juice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood (1994), Mars Attacks! (1996), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), and others.

Tim Burton is overrated. He's got too many fanboys (really fangirls) running around singing his praises like he's the pinnacle of cinematic genius.

Only on the internet. True admiration for him means liking him beyond his morbid stuff. He isn't overrated. It's just painted that way in these times of the "depression is cool" movement. I loved Beetlejuice as a kid, before I even knew the depth of it. I found it creepy, but I was fascinated by it. Plus, it was funny for kids and adults.

And Tim Burton did Batman in the way it was meant to be. Before then, Batman was seen as extremely hokey and silly. Burton revived it (the animated series that garnered such a large fanbase was quite noticeably heavily influenced by Burton's take). Then Schumacher ruined it once more. But that's beside the point. I'm not a fanboy. Only a fan. I don't like everything he does. But I do like him. He doesn't pander to the crowds. He does what he wants. Big Fish wasn't what people wanted from him. Nor was Charlie And The Chocolate Factor. Nor was Planet Of The Apes. But he does what he feels like doing. Better than what other directors would do in his shoes. Edward Scissorhands 2, anyone?

Everything.

EXCEPT Nightmare Before Christmas. Seriously, how could you forget possibly his most famous work to date? Otherwise, that's the most amazing montage ever, as Burton is my favorite director. Wasn't a big fan of Planet Of The Apes (that should have been nixed to make room for NBC), but he is definitely the most incredible visionary director this side of Michel Gondry. Not to mention he's very versatile.

Re: The World of Tim Burton
Burton didn't direct The Nightmare Before Christmas, Chronobrain. He was the producer, and one of the writers.

Whoa. Well, that proves I'm no fanboy. I had no f'ing clue. I was all ready to prove you wrong when I went to IMDB. I guess Disney didn't trust their beloved morals entirely to someone who makes movies heavily influenced by death. He did have Pee Wee to his credit, though. . .

Anyway, that's bizarre to me. You always see his name credited to it. Like in Kingdom Hearts (which, incidentally, you can blame heavily for his popularity with goth tweens), it says TIM BURTON'S Nightmare Before Christmas. That usually applies to directors.

Re: The World of Tim Burton
Actually this sort of question has been around as long as cinema.

The author or 'auteur', to use proper film jargon, of a film is a title usually assigned to the director as it is they who pulls all the assets of the film together into a single 'vision'.

In the case of The Nightmare Before Christmas, however, the entire thing was based upon sketches and stories that Burton created himself during his time working at Disney, and he had plenty of creative control during production. So although he didn't direct the film it's still *his* universe, like Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

I think the reason why people like Tim Burton's work is because it's so distinct. In an age where Sylvester Stallone can churn out another Rocky and Rambo movie in his 60s - not the mention the current slew of 80s cartoon and comic book blockbusters - it's nice to see films that are totally in a world of their own.

And Geroge Lucas was the producer and one of the Writers of The Empire Strikes Back. Burton created the characters and the world and basically made the movie.

Re: The World of Tim Burton
Anyone else find it a little ironic that a montage dedicated to Tim Burton has Johnny Depp for it's icon?

Re: The World of Tim Burton
I've sort of suggested this earlier. There should be a way to give certain tags (with pictures) prevalence over others. Problem is here that M & Cs doesn't have a picture of Burton in its database, but Depp has one, which is why he shows up. So, more pictures of people are needed. I don't know how much work that is.
