The Root of All Evil? Part 1: The God Delusion

The Root of All Evil? is a television documentary, written and presented by Richard Dawkins, in which he argues that the world would be better off without religion. The documentary was first broadcast in January 2006, in the form of two 45-minute episodes, on Channel 4 in the UK.

Dawkins has said that the title "The Root of All Evil?" was not his preferred choice, but that Channel 4 had insisted on it to create controversy. His sole concession from the producers on the title was the addition of the question mark. Dawkins has stated that the notion of anything being the root of all evil is ridiculous.[2] Dawkins's book The God Delusion, released in September 2006, goes on to examine the topics raised in the documentary in greater detail.

The God Delusion explores the unproven beliefs that are treated as factual by many religions and the extremes to which some followers have taken them. Dawkins opens the programme by describing the "would-be murderers . . . who want to kill you and me, and themselves, because they're motivated by what they think is the highest ideal." Dawkins argues that "the process of non-thinking called faith" is not a way of understanding the world, but instead stands in fundamental opposition to modern science and the scientific method, and is divisive and dangerous.

This is amazingly offensive. That is fantastic editing of what is probably a reasonable fellow to make him look and sound like the stereotype of a crazy fundamentalist.

Dawkin's a complete jerk. If any of you want a better outlook, try reading the work of Stephen J. Gould. Gould is both a critic of Dawkins, someone who constantly challenged his own faith and someone who isn't so celebrity obsessed that he has to go on channel 4 to make inflammatory comments (he's dead but that doesn't count).

What about it is offensive?

Why would we want to refer to someone who is challenged by faith, to obtain 'a better outlook'? An outlook on what? Dawkin's ideas are pretty straight forward. But please elaborate.

Why are his comments inflammatory?

The guy is only pointing out the truth about religion: it can be very dangerous in the wrong minds. So... what do you find offensive about this video (or Dawkins, for that matter) ?

If you want a truly offensive celebrity atheist, Christopher Hitchens is the man. That guy lives to stroke himself while he pisses people off; makes him bloody good fun to listen to too.

Personally, I think religion deserves to be trashed at every available opportunity. Why? Because it's a heaping load of mindless crap and mankind has learned too much to let it continue influencing the world in the manner it has.

There is nothing wrong with telling people that you think religion is dumb - it's being honest. It's a way of communicating that you give a damn about their well being... or have no patience for the ridiculous nonsense they spew or the nutjob leaders they support. God, Allah, Jesus, the Pope and all the other mythical deities, con-men and their flocks just need to fuck off. Seriously. Enough is enough.

Mega church leader Ted Haggard (the guy who kicked dawkins our of his church) resigns after being accused of affair... a GAY affair... with a male prostitute. No word on whether he will continue to meet with President George W. Bush or his advisers every Monday.

Oh, I do love irony!

Especially when it involves mega churches, pastors, a gay prostitute, and bush.

:')

Richard Dawkins says a lot of truths and I'm glad to see he does come forward where so many people hide their feelings about how harmful religion can be, to include for children. Thank you, Richard. I haven't heard anyone say it better.

Hard to tell. The title is the same, but the YouTube link is no longer available. The Editors or the Admin will have to make the call.

It was a dupe so I merged them. But I gave Typo (the dupe submitter) credit for the second in the series.

Pastor Goebels (the meth smoking man's man): "See what yer doing? It's the atheist arrogance."

LOL The guy is quite easily the biggest hypocrite I have ever even known of. People actually listen to this screwball? Wow...

(scratches chin)

Ya know what... Fuck mankind. May every last one of us become extinct, and the world free of us. Because, any race that can produce such defects as that paster and Bush and people who are still down with him... (and fuck i want to go on)... should be retired forever. Never to reproduce.

Shit, I knew I was a flawed enough specimen to warrant such a harsh judgment; but, after seeing this video it now seems clear that too much of the populous is tainted. So, rather than bothering with the pointless route of trying to keep their DNA from spreading, I say we just finish off the WHOLE lot - and I mean ALL of mankind - in one go. Wadda ya say?

(Oh, and the best response to my thoughtful comments is to write something funny, like, "You first!". I'd dig that.)
