New Feature: Link Mirrors

Nov 22, 2007 10:07 PM Comments: 8

In an effort to combat broken links, we set up MilkandCookies.com to be able to hold multiple mirrors for each of our links. A mirror is an alternative location on the web for any of the links on our site. This allows us to immediately fall back to an alternative location when the primary one is no longer valid.

To submit a mirror, simply go to the link you have an alternative location for and click Add Mirror. You will be forwarded to a form page where you simply enter in the new location and you're done.

In many ways mirrors are processed the same way new links are handled. For instance, mirrors are validated, and checked against our existing links to avoid duplication, and only registered users can submit mirrors.

Unlike new links, we already have the title, description and tags, so there is no need to enter that information again. Mirrors do not go live immediately, they are verified by MilkandCookies moderators first. Ad mirrors do not count against the daily total of links you can submit on one day.

While there are no points awarded for adding mirrors, we are working on it. When points for mirrors are available, you will get credit retroactively. We simply didn't want to wait any longer to make this feature available.

We hope you enjoy this new feature. Feel free to share with us you comments and questions.

hey Jax...maybe I'm just not seeing it...but is there a special page mods can go to to view newly submitted mirrors?

No, we haven't added a interface yet for Mods to approve them. For for another day or so, it's Admin only. So far the volume is low, so it's not an issue yet.

Re: New Feature: Link Mirrors
I've added a working mirror here:

http://www.milkandcookies.com/link/43969/detail/

and here:

http://www.milkandcookies.com/link/50207/detail/

but the status still says Rejected. (though, I can see the link even when logged out)

Re: New Feature: Link Mirrors
Both links are working at least. Even though no one can see them. Heh.

Seems as though there is just a couple of last details before this new feature is ready for prime time.

BTW, nice job Jaxon & Bryan... this and the merged links are vast improvements.
